1. The crew is to blame because they didn't listen to ODysseus by killing and eating the sheep. "... but die of hunger, starve to death- that's the worst of all. So up with you now, let's drive off the pick of Helios' sleek herds, slaughter them to the gods..."(12.368-371)

There are three possible answers to who is responsible for the death of the sun god's cattle. One of them would be the crew. They could be responsible for their death because Odysseus specifically told them "Not one men among us...will slaughter an Ox or ram" (12.325-326). This means it's not Odysseus's fault and the only people to blame are the crew. Another person to blame for killing the cattle is Odysseus. It can be considered his fault because he was asleep while he was supposed to be watching his starving crew, which drove them mad into eating the cattle. A third persons that can be blamed for the death of Helios' heard are the Gods of Mount Olympus. It is their fault because after odysseus prayed to them, they made him fall asleep. This means it wasn't odysseus' fault that he fell asleep, leaving his crew to slay the sun god's sheep. A fourth person that could possibly be blamed is Circe. This is a little out of the way, but she could be blammed because if she had never mentioned the island where the sun god's cattle were, than the crew maybe would never have gone there.

I think Odysseus, the crew, Zeus, and Eurylochus are to blame for the death of the shipmates. Odysseus is to blame because he made his crew "swear [him] a binding oath" not to kill the cattle (12.323). He should have known that oaths never work. The crew is to blame because they wanted to go on land. Odysseus says, "So Eurylochus urged, and shipmates cheered" (12.319). Zeus is to blame because he says, "Sun, you keep on shining among the deathless gods and mortal men across the good green earth. And as for the guilty ones, why, soon enough on the wine-dark sea I'll hit their racing ships with a white-hot bolt, I'll tear it into splinters" (12.414-418). Eurylochus is the sole crew member to blame. He says, "Look, your crew's half-dead with labor, starved for sleep, and you forbid us to set foot on land, this island here, washed by waves, where we might catch a decent meal" (12.304)

It was the Gods fault. They knew the crew was starving. They knew that the only way for them not to eat the sun god's cattle was to have Odysseus nagging them not to. So after Odysseus warned them, the gods made him sleep.

There are 3 people that you could blame the deaths of the crew for. You could blame Odysseus, the crew, or the gods.

In book 12 of the Odyssey many can be to blame for the crew. One way is the gods. The gods could've guided them out of the way so they wouldn't have been tempted."but for one whole month wind blew nonstop." 350

In book 12 of the Odyssey the remaining members of Odysseus' crew die because they ate the forbidden cattle of the sungod. There are 4 people that could be held guilty for their death. The first person that could be responsible for their death is Odysseus. He is responsible for their death because he made them take a "binding oath" (12.323) that no one would eat the cattle, when he could have just avoided the whole island. Another group of people that could be held responsible for the crews death is the crew themselves. They are responsible for their own death because "they quickly take the oath" (12.329) and left, but still went behind his back and killed and ate the sacred cattle anyway. The next person that could be blamed for their death is Eurylochus. He is a major contributer to their death because "So he urged, and shipmates cheered again. At once they drove off the Sungod's finest cattle-" (12.379). Finally, the reason for the death of Odysseus' crew could be because of Zeus. Zeus is another reason for their death because "the god cut short their journey home forever" (12.452). These are a few people that could be held responsible for the death of Odysseus' crew.

The reasons for the crews death can be blamed on three people. You can blame Odysseus, the gods and you can blame the crew for their own death. You can blame Odysseus because he did tell his crew to not eat the cattle, but Odysseus fell asleep so when he was sleeping the crew killed and ate the cattle. Odyseeus shouldn't of fell alseep on his crew.

1. A quote on page 282 shows how the gods are responsible for the death of Odysseus's crew. Odysseus says to Zeus, "Father Zeus! The rest of you blissful gods that nevr die-you with your fatal sleep, you lulled me into disaster. Left on their own, look at this monstrous thing my crew has concocted!"

the first way is the crew is respopnsible for their own death. In the story odysseus is asleep and the crew slaughters the cattle so odysseus is unaware of their actions. "my eyes the poured with a sweet, sound sleep" 12.360 the next way is Odysseus is responsible. odysseus should have been watching his crew so they didnt kill any of the cattle. finally the responsiblikty cant be blamed on anyone because the crew was hungery and couldnt resist the temtation of the cattle. also odysseus was sound asleep and he trusted his crew so he thopught that they wouldnt do anything stupid like that. the last group that could have been responsible could have been the gods. the gods could have been tempting the men with the cattle to the point that they snapped and killed one.

The death of Odysseus' crew can be blamed on four people. These people include Odysseus, the crew themselves, and the gods. Odysseus can be blamed because he could have resisted the crew's request to stop at the island and he could have stayed awake. The crew can responsable of their own deaths because they ate the caddle even though they swore to Odysseus to stay away from them. The gods can be responsable because they made Odysseus go to sleep which allowed the crew to eat the caddle while he was asleep. The last person that is possibly responsable is Eurylochus becasue he was the individual to request to stop on the island.

The first person you can blame for there death is the crew members themselves. They were told not to eat the cattle or something bad will happen. In the book it says, " They quickly swore the oath that I required and once once they had vowed they'd never harm the herds." (12,328-29)

Odysseus can be blamed because he could have resisted the crew's request to stop at the island and he could have stayed awake."but soon as I'd prayed to all the gods who rule Olympus, down on my eyes they poured a sweet sound sleep..." (12.363-364)is an example. The crew can responsable of their own deaths because they ate the caddle even though they swore to Odysseus to stay away from them."Once they'd prayed, slaughtered and skinned the cattle" (12.386) The gods can be responsable because they made Odysseus go to sleep which allowed the crew to eat the caddle while he was asleep. This is shown here:"... but die of hunger, starve to death- that's the worst of all. So up with you now, let's drive off the pick of Helios' sleek herds, slaughter them to the gods..."(12.368-371). The last person that is possibly responsable is Eurylochus becasue he was the individual to request to kill the caddle. There are four people to blaim for the death of the crew. First is Odysseus. He was responsible because he fell asleep and gave the crew an opportunity to kill the cattle "soon as I'd prayed to all the gods who rule Olympus, down on my eyes they poured a sweet sound sleep." (12.363-364) The crew was also resonsible for there deaths becasue they ate the sun cattle "At once they drove off the Sungods finest cattle-"(12. 380). The gods are also responsible for the death of the crew because they killed the crew "Father Zues! the rest you blissful gods who never die- punish them all, that crew of Laertes' son Odyesseus-" (12.406-407). And last but not least the final person to blame is Eurylochus because he was the one who convinced the crew to eat the cattle "o up with you new, let's drive off the pick of Helios' sleek herds."(12.369-370).

I think that the crew members are responsible for their death. At first, they disobeyed Odysseus and decided to kill the cattle. When Odysseus fell asleep, Europlhyican knew that if he told Odysseus that he and his crew were going to kill the cattle, that Odysseus would say no. When he saw him fall asleep in the deep sleep, he told the crew the plan. “So up with you now, let’s drive off the pick of Helios’ sleek herds, slaughter them to the gods who rule the skies up there.” (281.370) When Odysseus woke up from his sleep, he sensed a strong smell and he knew that his crew members killed the cattle.
