Summer reading ensures that students are reading at the proper level, but it takes away the pleasure of reading, doesn't teach kids to choose appropriate books, and overwhelms us because of our already high work-load.

Summer reading is a good concept because it keeps minds active and teaches kids time management, but the certain books that are required reading need to be removed as they give kids a negative attitude towards reading.

I think schools should not have required summer reading because summer is a time for relaxation, a time to learn skills not taught in school and it puts pressure on kids to read a required book in a certain way.

I encourage required summer reading because it increases a student's reading proficiency, exposes the pupil to new ideas and keeps the mind active during a sluggish vacation.

I believe that high schools should not require summer reading because kids may have a lot of other things to do, they should be able to relax and be free, and they don't have to read a required novel that is too challenging for them to read.

I believe that summer reading should be assigned, but students should have a say in what their reading because then it ignites a love for reading, increases class participation, and influence the current curriculum choices.

By simply allowing students to choose their own books, schools would increase the number of children actually doing the reading, lessen the reading gap between social classes and provide a wider variety of literary ideas to enhance the enriching summer reading experience.

Summer Reading is beneficial to our education and keeps our mind open to learning, however, we should be granted more choice in book selection because we will enjoy reading a book more if it is one that we selected personally.

Summer reading, despite what the "homework victims" maintain, can be beneficial and enjoyable, but only if the kid cooperates with the assignment.

High schools should assign one required book and two books of the students choice for summer reading because it keeps students thinking, it teaches time management, and would encourage students to read for enjoyment.

Summer reading is harmful to students, because not only does it cause and increase the level of stress in students, but it eliminates time for both "play" and relaxation.

I support required summer reading because it keeps young minds active during vacation, helps increase a students learning proficiency, and pushes intimidated learners into reading challenging and beneficial books.

Summer reading, the bane of the summer; it is the thief of time, creates vast quantities of stress, and burns out a student's energy and motivation to learn.

Summer reading requirements can be helpful to struggling students, but most teenagers consider them boring and unnecessary unless they get to choose some of the books they read.

Summer reading is a necessary assignment that keeps the youths' minds active during the summer; however, assigning a set of specific books is not effective in engaging students.

I do not think that schools should require summer reading, because it may prevent them from doing other beneficial things and may cause kids to resent reading.

I agree with summer reading but if there is summer reading then students should be allowed to choose their own book; because the average American reads only a four books every year so they need to read more, students can learn many things, from new words to a different view into life, and students would be able to choose their own book to read, for both pleasure and for summer reading.

In my opinion summer reading is a must because it will help the students keep their knowledge during the summer, but students should be able to choose from a list the teachers have given them since it will provide the students with some freedom to choose their book/s, and the teacher can make sure the books are appropriate for that grade.

I think that summer reading is beneficial to students because it increases reading and writing proficiency, forces students to manage their time better, and reinforces what they learned during the previous school year.

I think summer reading shouldn't be required because it takes time from summer-only activities, turns children off to reading, and gives children no choice.

Many students view summer reading as an injustice; however they are oblivious to the fact that summer reading must remain because it improves their reading skills and vocab, gets their brains moving before school starts, and helps the teacher fit more material into the course.

It is my opinion that summer reading is important and beneficial to a student as long as it does not exceed one or two preselected books and a few chosen by the reader so that it combines formal, school education with all the things kids can learn from reading on their own.

Schools shouldn't require a certain summer reading book because it gives students no say in the book they want to read, it turns them off from wanting to read, and takes time from camps, summer jobs, and vacations.

Summer marks a time of vacation and camps, a break from school to spend with family and friends. It is freedom from teachers and schoolwork, however when students are strained with loads of summer reading, there is no time to think about these summer activities. Some students are assigned very little, have time to get their schoolwork done and enjoy the rest of the summer. Others have many more essays, packets and required books that are not beneficial to their education. I think schools should not have required summer reading because summer is a time for relaxation, a chance to learn skills not taught in school and it puts pressure on students to read a required book for academic reasons.
