For many people who live in the United States summer means to them to have fun, take a break from difficult problems, away from stress and deadlines. But, for high school students summer vacation gets interrupted especially, on the last month of summer vacation it’s filled with tiredness---just because of the summer reading program. Every year during the summer Teenagers are assigned a certain book for the summer reading program. Should high schools assign summer reading? I think high schools shouldn’t assign summer reading because you get to have no fun, some books may be hard, and it affects students feel about learning and school

Summer used to be a time for students to relax and spend time with family and friends. Now, many students across the country are starting to be assigned summer reading. Summer reading is when the school assigns the students a book to read over the summer. Now many student’s last month of summer is miserable, because there trying to finish their summer reading book that they may not even like. I think that high schools should not assign summer reading because it take up time from the students vacation, it makes the students stressful, and the student can’t choose the book that they’re going to read.

Over the summer kids go months without any school work and reading. Recently some schools have been wondering if they should have a summer reading program and what the benefits to one are. I know a lot of students do not enjoy summer reading but I still feel that it is important to have. There are more bonuses to having summer reading then not. I think that it is very smart for high schools to assign summer reading because it will keep the students brain engaged, the students can learn a lot, and the school can use it to see how you are doing academically after the long break.

To most American teenagers summer reading is the worst thing in the world, but I think that summer reading is a good thing and that high schools should assign it. The first reason why I think that high schools should I assign summer reading is that it builds students reading skills and vocabulary. Next, it gives kids something productive to do besides sit inside and play video games all day. Lastly, because it makes sure students don’t lose what they have already learned while they are not in school. I think that high schools should assign summer reading because, it builds students vocabulary and reading skills, it gives kids something productive to do, and it makes sure they don’t forget what they have learned about English and reading.

“Mom, I don’t want to do summer reading!” “Christa, you need to do it. School starts in 2 days.” This scene is a very common one during the end of summer. I am a high school student and I do not like to do summer reading. Why do students have to read over summer vacation? I’d like to know too. When it comes to summer reading, students don’t get to pick the books to read, it causes stress for students and parents and summer is a break from school, not time to have to do school work.

Should high schools choose to give students summer reading? I don’t think so. Summer reading just makes kids inactive, and it also is kind of boring for kid because they don’t get to pick their own books to read for summer. I also think that if kid has to read a very long book for a long time they will get bored. If high schools assign summer reading students will not want to do it so, I thinks they should at least make summer reading optional.

High schools and middle schools are always giving a lot of work. The schools give kids’ summer reading thinking it’s going to help them. When really it’s not helping kids at all. When High schools give summer reading it makes the kids dread to go to school and half the time they don’t read or do anything during the summer anyway but go outside and play and go to the beach. So high schools should not give summer reading because keeps kids/teens inside all day reading when they should be outside, if the book isn’t interesting to the students then they won’t read it, and the students need to rest their minds for the next school year.

Summer is supposed to be a time for freedom from homework, for family and for relaxation. Now that schools are assigning summer reading kids are losing that freedom more and more every year due to the fact that schools feel you will develop academically from it over the summer and not forget the stuff you learned over the school year. Now my school district is making us do summer reading even in elementary school. I feel that high schools should not assign summer reading because it takes up time, makes you stressful and you can’t pick the book.

Summer reading in high schools is just flat out stupid. High schools in America feel the urge to bombard students with loads of unnecessary work during the school year. So why do the same thing in the summer. Summer reading is a lot of work that causes tons of stress on students and teachers alike. Summer is a time of fun and not work, but I do feel that students should have some type of assignment provided to them to keep the brain active.

If schools made summer reading optional, and there was a reward of extra credit, I think that would be a great idea for schools. This way students that want to do reading in the summer will be rewarded, but students who don’t read will not be penalized. I do not think that school should assign summer reading. Almost all schools have summer reading but I don't think that it is really worth it because, summer is a time to relax, some kids don’t read in the summer so they start off with bad grades, and teachers should not choose the books.

I think summer reading should be assigned to high school students, here are my reasons why. Schools are debating whether or not to have summer reading, I am with the people who agree we should have it. We have more than 2 months of summer, we can at least have one summer reading assignment. The majority of teenagers who do work don’t forget more of their skills, compared to the students who don’t do any work. Josh was a student at Strath Haven High School. He was assigned summer reading to read the Hunger Games. He heard that his English teacher does not test the students on the book. He did not read the book over summer, but all of his classmates did. He thought he could skip it, but the next time he read he was slow and a bad paced reader. He lost and forgotten his skills of reading over summer, now he has to regain his skills.

Driving to the two and a half hour ride to the Poconos and in the morning driving three hours to a Boy Scout camp in New York and drive back home to Wallingford every weekend, summer reading is a blessing. Summer reading is viewed as a chore to many high school students and I am guessing teachers hear the complaints from students but if students can just get over that they have to read something they might realize that the summer reading is not that bad. If you only have to read two books with three hundred pages, if you just read a chapter every day you should get both books done fairly quickly, not to mention sometimes you start reading a chapter and you get hooked, then you read another chapter and another you didn’t really ‘waste your time reading’ because you actually enjoying what you are doing. I think that summer reading should be assigned over the summer because it keeps the students a bit more focused on school, it’s easier for the teacher to start a class plan, and if a student does not have anything to do, they can start reading and finish the book fairly quickly.

Summer is a vacation or break from the academic year but, as always, tedious reading assignments push students in a state of stress during the month before school. Students understand that these assignments are important, because they are usually welcomed back with a quiz or report on the assignment done. In which causes students to procrastinate until the last month where they become stressed and cram the assignments at once. Cramming, as known by many teachers does not help the student with the subject, but summer reading does have its own benefactors. I think we should have summer reading programs, because they are designed to help students remember the last academic year, prepare for the next, as well as help students pull out life lessons from the books the students are assigned.

Some people like reading and some don't. Don't you think we can do something about this. I do, and here are my ideas. I think that summer reading should be optional because people have a hard time read, some don't have an interest and there some people enjoy reading.

In 2007, Duke University did a study on 175 students, Duke had half of the students read summer reading and the other half not read, then they had the student take the S.A.T’s and the results were the same. High school students have had summer reading throughout the years but now they are starting to question whether it will benefit the students or not. Strath Haven High School has had summer reading for a very long time. Every year during the summer you are asked to read 1 or more books for the school year. I feel that students should not have summer reading because it takes up too much time, it does not show up during the school year, and if kids spend time during the summer reading then when they come back to school they will not want to read when they get back to school.
