Almost everyone has heard the expression, “You can’t escape your fate.” In the novel, The Odyssey, there are a lot of examples of this. You can’t escape your fate, every action has a reaction. When you do something, a god, a person, or even you decides what the reaction will be.

In The Odyssey Hubris can hurt other people too like when Poseidon wrecks the ships of the Phaeacias. Hubris is shown in many other circumstances throughout the book. Revenge is closely represented with hubris in the book with Poseidon and Odysseus and Odysseus and the suitors. In The Odyssey Homer shows how hubris can cause you problems, for example, when Odysseus tells the Cyclops his name even after he escapes and without this theme the book would have never happened.

Have you ever had a person that "did you wrong?" One who violated your trust and made you think twice about your friendship. Revenge, it is what drives people to make inadequate choices. Revenge is the reason of why some of Odysseus men were killed by the sun god for eating his cattle. revenge is one of the dominating themes of the Odyssey

A theme that plays an important role for many of the characters in The Odyssey is loyalty. Loyalty is faithfulness or a commitment to a person. Many characters in the Odyssey show loyalty in their personality. In The Odyssey, Homer shows that loyalty pays off in the end, for example, Penelope stayed loyal to Odysseus by not cheating, Odysseus's crew was not loyal to Odysseus and they died, and Odysseus was loyal to Penelope by not staying with any of the women on his journey even hen he had the chance.

“Bravery is the capacity to perform properly even when scared half to death.” Is what Omar N Bradley thought about bravery. In Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey he tells a story about a man named Odysseus and his adventures. Odysseus has to go through many life-or-death situations. In order to get past them he has to face his fears with bravery. In The Odyssey, Odysseus shows that if you are brave it will help you get what you want.

The Gods are always watching over us, the Gods are the ones that lead us into brighter futures’ They make are life as good as they can make it. The Gods will always guard us when we need them. The Gods will always be by our side when we need them the most. In the epic poem “The Odyssey” Athena helps Odysseus in many ways for Odysseus to see his wife Penelope and his son Telemachus

To the Ancient Greeks, every aspect of their life was in the gods’ hands. Nestor says to Telemachus, “The minds of the everlasting gods don’t change so quickly” (3.164). Free will does give people some freedom but still are not fully in control. Fate played an important role in life being that it cannot be avoided. In The Odyssey, Homer shows that Odysseus washing up on Pheacia, Odysseus returning home safely and Odysseus killing the suitors were all unavoidable by fate.

In the world of the Odyssey every charachter has many small personalities which play a big part in the story. When people read through the Odyssey they will see that hospitality plays a part with each charachter. Whether the charachter welcomes Odysseus into theier home or doesnt varies and whatever happens depends on the charachters feeling about hospitality. Many charachters in the Odyssey dont like Odysseus and in return reject him and do not give him hopitality which makes it harder for him to reach home. The Odyssey shows in ancient Greeks how hospitality should or should not be with the Cyclops, Telemachus, and Odysseus.

The idea of fate is a very big part of the odyssey. Fate is used in a lot of different ways and it is sometimes very easy to see and sometimes very hard to pick out. Some ways it is used in the odyssey are when Odysseus was told that he would eventually get home by the prophet tiresias then he did get home. Also fate is almost like your life is predetermined, and when anything bad happens to someone they just blame the gods because they are the ones that have control over everything.

There are too many cases in The Odyssey where cunning over strength takes place. In The Odyssey, Homer displays many ways that cunning over strength happens, for instance, when Odysseus is greatly outnumbered by the suitors and wants to kill them, when Odysseus is in a lif or death situation with the Phaecians , and when Odysseus has to trick a cyclops so that his crew does not die. In the epic poem, The Odyssey Homer shows that cunning over strength pays off in the long run.

Now in the world, many people have religious beliefs. Actually a long time ago, people already had them. In The Odyssey, most people also had their own beliefs. Homer said they believed in gods. It also shows the importance of the gods to human beings in Ancient Greece. They believed the gods could help them if they followed the gods’ steps; for them, the gods’ word was the law they must follow.

“Any man-any god who met you-would have to be some champion lying cheat to get past you for all-round craft and guile! You terrible man, foxy, ingenious, never tired of twists and tricks” Here is Athena meet Odysseus at Ithaca. She is not criticize him but admire him. It’s admired for the experience of Odysseus with Cyclops, Nausicaa and swineherd. Shows the foxy and making tricks can help people far away from trouble.

A person is born with feelings of envy and hate. If he gives way to them, they will lead him to violence and crime, and any sense of loyalty and good faith will be abandoned (Xun Zi). This quote is perfect to describe how loyalty and disloyalty is portrayed in the Odyssey. Loyalty is important to the Greeks shown by the Odyssey but also loyalty is important to all, criminals or heroes. Unwavering loyalty is always craved most likely because people want or need someone that they can count on to help them. Unwavering loyalty from anyone in the Odyssey is rewarded but disloyalty even from the closes of friends is punished or the friendship is broken and can never be gained back.

Odysseus himself was a noble man who did what needed to be done, including his sacrifices and libations to the gods. He was especially fond of Athena who he always stayed loyal to. In return for Odysseus’ Loyalty, Athena looked out for him and guided him towards his goals. She did this many times throughout the book but one of the most crucial times in the book was when Odysseus finally had reached Ithaca and Athena appeared warning him of what dangers waited. She disguised Odysseus as an old beggar, hid his treasure the Phaecians had given him, and helped him create a plan to kill the suitors. If it wasn’t for Odysseus’ loyalty to Athena, she would have never helped him and he would have most likely died in the first book called the Iliad. This would have meant that the Odyssey would never have been written.

“So, the gods don’t hand out all their gifts at once, not build and brains and flowing speech to all. One man may fail to impress us with his looks but a god can crown his words with beauty, charm, and men look on with delight when he speaks out” (8.192-) In The Odyssey, Odysseus counted on his strength to help him, however, you see that he falls back to his wit to overcome obstacles. Even though Odysseus needs his strength to achieve his plan he has the wits to figure it out, therefore showing that wits are better than brawn

Throughout The Odyssey, Homer shows that even heroes can succumb to temptation through the character of Odysseus. Even though Odysseus has been tempted by many things, he has not suffered the defeat of his hubris. He has overcome some of his temptation but for the most part he has succumbed. Since Odysseus is a great king his faults will not be counted greatly. Homer wants us to understand that temptation is something that is avoidable but at times unavoidable. In The Odyssey temptation can be very fatal at times. So even if you succumb to temptation you can still be a great hero.

“Where there is no vision, the people perish.” This is a quote from the bible that states if a group has no leader, then they will fail. I think that this is shown in Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey in a lot of ways. It is shown when Odysseus leads his men out of Polythemus’ cave. It is also evident in other parts of the poem. In the poem it is evident that no group of men will be successful without at true leader.

When caught in a tough situation you have to be on your toes and ready for anything. In life you always have to be thinking and ready to outsmart someone if they are trying to harm you. A select few of the characters in The Odyssey had and used this trait to their advantage. In The Odyssey, Homer showed that outthinking your opponent was respected by the gods because Odysseus was able to outsmart the Cyclops, was able to disguise himself so he wouldn’t be recognized and was able to find a way to avoid the sirens.

The hospitality in The Odyssey is important to Homer. Homer shows a passion for hospitality in The Odyssey. A lot of people boast and brag but don’t know that there can be consequences for their actions. Odysseus finds out about this throughout The Odyssey. One consequence that Odysseus finds out about is revenge. He learns about the consequence revenge with Poseidon and with himself and the suitors. It was inevitable for Odysseus to wash up on the shore of Pheacia. After Poseidon destroys Odysseus’s raft, Ino gives him a scarf making him immortal until he takes it off so he doesn’t drown. Ino pities Odysseus and says “Here take this scarf tie it around your waist-it is immortal” (5.381-382). Also, it is said in the beginning of the book that he would wash up on a beach. Homer makes it clear that Odysseus would land on Pheacia because gods help him so he doesn’t die.

In book 9, Odysseus displayed bravery after he stabs the cyclops in his eye. After he does this he needed to think of a way for him and the crewmates that hadn't gotten eaten to get out. He knew that the other cyclops would come in the cave to see what happened, so when they moved the bolder they would try to escape. Eventually, they were able to sneak out of the cave and see their ship waiting there for a new journey. "And from there we sailed on, glad to escape our death yet sick at heart for the comrades we had lost." (9.629) That is one of they many times Odysseus dispayed what bravery is.

Most people want things, but they are too afraid to get them. If you have courage you will get far in life by going for the things you want. Courage is a great characteristic to have and great people have it. In The Odyssey, Odysseus shows that if you have courage you will overcome many obstacles to get what you want.

In book 9 of the Odyssey, Odysseus and his crew narrowly escape death by a Cyclops called Polyphemus. If it wasn’t for Odysseus the crew would have certainly met a gruesome demise. The crew of Odysseus listened and had faith in their leader which helped them to escape with their lives. Odysseus created a seemingly mad plan to blind the Cyclops but the men did not falter in their plan. This led to the crew escaping on the underside of sheeps due to the crews faith in their leader.

Odysseus leads his crew through the river Styx and makes it out alive. They were the first ever to make it through there. "I vowed to all the dead, to the drifting, listless spirits of their ghosts" This was very brave of Odysseus to go through the river Styx. Odysseus' crew was the first ever to make it through in one piece. The crew wouldn’t of made it through the River Styx without a strong leader, Odysseus.

In the odyssey Temptation plays a big role. Temptation is a desire for something that is wanted. Temptation in the odyssey comes in many different ways. When Odysseus was away from home he was tempted by the evil sea nymphs. He was also tempted to touch the son of the cattle. Most of the things that Odysseus is tempted with he succumbs to it. There are even some things that Odysseus doesn’t even know he’s being tempted with. For example when he defeated the Cyclops. He was tempted to say his real name; therefore he had to pay the consequences for that.

One example of hubris in The Odyssey is when Odysseus tells the Cyclops his name. This shows hubris because Odysseus was already safe and still called back. Odysseus says to the Cyclops, “Say Odysseus, raider of cities, he gouged your eye, Laertes’ son who makes his home in Ithaca!” (9. 560-562). This also shows hubris because he not only bragged about gouging the eye but also about his father and his home. Lastly to brag about how he can do anything to you and even if the Cyclops knows where Odysseus lives the Cyclops can’t do anything about it. That is one of many examples of hubris in the epic The Odyssey.
